Scott was appointed by Gov. Nikki Haley in 2013 to serve the remainder of Senator Jim DeMint's term, making him the first black senator from the South since Reconstruction. The 2013 appointments of Scott and Mo Cowan marked the first time in United States history when two black senators served in the U.S. Senate at the same time.
